The Jeep Cherokee XJ is one of the most popular sports utility vehicles of all time. Made from 1984 through 2001, the Cherokee comes with many options, including an adjustable roof rack system for hauling extra gear. Examine the ends of the front crossmember where it secures to the stationary (lengthwise) tracks on the roof. On newer models, you will see a push button release mechanism. Older models have a mechanism in the form of a metal wheel with vertical grooves. Determine what type of system your vehicle has.
Press the driver's side crossbar release button. Hold the release button down and slide the end of the crossbar forward or backward to the desired position. Release the button. Repeat this procedure for the other end of the cross member. Repeat for the second cross member.
Position a quarter or other large coin in one of the adjustment wheel slots. Turn the steering wheel counterclockwise with the coin to loosen the crossmember end. Slide the crossbar forward or backward to the desired position. Tighten the adjusting wheel by turning clockwise with the coin. Repeat the process at the other end of the header and the second header.
